Know Your Rights - BALIFFS

"...there is no shortage of organisations deeply worried about the white paper that, earlier this year, proposed to give bailiffs the right to force entry to domestic premises..."

"Whereas TVs and video players will not fetch much at auction, a car is at least a £500 asset - and, best of all, they do not have to get inside the house to seize it. They just call up the car removal contractors and have it taken away - having left a note for the owner."

Bailiffs are allowed to:

* Walk through an open or unlocked door
* Climb over a garden wall
* Enter through an open window
* Seize and remove your car

Bailiffs are not allowed to:

* Seize goods which are not yours
* Seize clothes and bedding
* Seize tools that you need for your job
* Force entry into your home - unless they are refused access to previously seized goods
