Richard Stallman at the 5th international GPLv3 conference; 21st November 2006Just been reading the transcript of Richard Stallman GPLv3 5th International Conference .. its available here http://fsfeurope.org/projects/gplv3/tokyo-rms-transcript It has such beautiful content as "Treacherous Computing is an instance of a very dangerous phenomenon, namely a conspiracy of companies to restrict the public - to restrict the public's access to technology. Such conspiracies ought to be a crime. The executives of those companies should be tried, and if convicted, sent to prison for conspiring to restrict the public's access to technology. However, that sort of policy would have required leaders that believe in government of the people, by the people, for the people. What we have today is government of the people, by the flunkies, for the corporations. By aland at 2006-12-13 13:21 | Open Source | Politics | aland's blog | login to post comments | read more
Message fwd from Stuart CrosthwaiteHello Everyone There's a full Sheffield City Council meeting this Wednesday 6th at 2pm in the Town Hall. Amongst other items there is a resolution (put by the LibDems...) arguing that the right to work for asylum seekers should be reinstated. There will be an opportunity for anybody to ask questions and make points about the issue from the public gallery. To do this you need to get to the Town Hall reception by about 1.30pm on the day and register yourself. It might take them a while to get round to discussing this resolution but probably not later than 3pm. With growing numbers of destitute asylum seekers in Sheffield, without the right to benefits, accommodation or to work legally the problem is a real one. The Council has limited powers to change current legislation but it can and should publicise its opposition to a policy which creates poverty, crime and illegal low-wage work. Love Sheffield Music Hate RacismJust heard about this! http://www.lmhrsheffield.co.uk/ looks good, I look forward to hearing more of it, and getting the record. ‘Love Sheffield Music Hate Racism’ Album Launch Party!!!!!! Thursday 5th October @ THE HUBS, HALLAM UNION, SHEFFIELD “Ignorance and misunderstanding are the underlying causes of racism. Music cuts through all that crap so we can judge a human being by the quality of their soul and musicality which are so much more important than the color of there skin or their nationality” Richard Hawley, June 2006. Sheffield city has a long and proud history of challenging racism and an equally proud history of producing great music. We decided to promote the energy and quality of our SHEFFIELD MUSIC and use it to celebrate diversity; by putting together the ‘LOVE SHEFFIELD MUSIC HATE RACISM ALBUM’, a double CD featuring Sheffield artists. Sheffield Free BusI had a fantastic day out in the Sheffield Free Bus today. https://publish.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/sheffield/2006/05/341014.html "...Some people believe in asking large coporations for cheap services so that there is less profit made. Whilst we understand that this is a desirable goal we go one step further to ask for a cooperative way of living, where no profit is produced. Although there are potential alternatives to using buses such as cycling. realistically people need effective public transport that is environmentally friendly and better than running individual cars. Corporations are exploiting our needs" By aland at 2006-05-20 19:01 | Community | Environment | Politics | aland's blog | 1 comment | read more
G8 SheffieldG8 arrives in Sheffield "Get over it"I went to see Jay Baker's film "Get over it" last Thursday. Details: The Corporationhttp://www.thecorporation.com/uk/ See the film if you get the chance: Indymedia servers siezed by FBI in US and UKIndymedia servers have been siezed by the FBI. The hosters, rackspace, have handed over the the hard drives. What can we learn from this. and how can we build a more reliable infrastructure? Next StepsWith the success of Burngreave Community Area Network, we need to start building on it and putting some content in through the pipes.. Next steps ? 1. plug residents who are interested working with Community Organisations directly into the CAN ? 2. get timebank software going ? Use it to coordinate volunteer activity ? 3. find ways of 'can' abling every community group in Burngreave ?
